iPhone Applications

Hello Everyone!

We have been listening attentively to all that you have said, and finally the applications’ updated are now just around the corner!

These applications are made to help you cope with the many difficulties of learning a new language, and so we strive to make them cater to your needs. Though iTunes allows for reviews and such, discussion on the applications is very limited. As such we have decided to open the Blog as a platform from which all news about the applications can be made public-including the release dates of updates and their contents, and where we as a community can come together to discuss the applications indepth.

Let us start a real and active dialogue so that we may mold the applications into all that the can be. We will be keeping you informed on all the developments with the applications as they happen, so be sure to keep everyone informed on your impressions of the applications (i.e. leave us feedback, we’re always open to improvements!).

Looking forward to hearing from everyone!

Hi everyone. :) My name’s Jason, and I’m the manager of mobile applications for Innovative Language Learning. Your great suggestions have already resulted in some exciting new features in our apps and there’s more to come. I’m looking forward to working with all of you to build the best language learning apps out there.

  2. Dashee Says:

Hi, thanx for this. The applications are really very helpful. I was just wondering how can I get the 50 percent discount on other applications? I already bought one and I got the coupon code.

    Thank you,

    Dashee

  3. cemalettin Says:

    please turkısh russıan language do

  4. Nicola Says:

I’m disappointed. The swahili WordPower has the wrong audio files for several words. please fix it.

  5. Renee Says:

    Hi Jason,

This is a great product, however, the sound is almost non-existent. I can’t hear the pronunciation at all - even with the iphone sound at max and my Bose headphones on. I hope you’ll be addressing this issue because I really love the interface and can see the benefit of the product.
    Thanks

  6. ssinclare Says:

I love the fact that you guys update…. but can you guys let us know what the updates are for? Some of them are pretty obvious, but some of them I don’t know what happened. They seem the same!

  7. Jason Says:

The 50% off discount coupon is only valid for subscriptions to our language learning websites. Apple unfortunately doesn’t provide us a way of giving discounts on iPhone/iPod Touch apps. So as compensation, we offer that discount for our websites.

Any changes made in an app update are listed under the “what’s new” section on the app’s iTunes Store description page. Sometimes bugfixes and various internal improvements are made that aren’t readily apparent.

For those having volume issues, first please try sliding the volume slider to the right. If the slider doesn’t help, iPhone apps all seem to share the same volume settings. Do you happen to have an app you turned the volume down in? If so, please turn the volume back up in that app, and the volume should also increase in this app. Recently we’ve heard from several other users having this same problem who found that the YouTube app was the issue. After they turned the volume back up there, our app’s volume also increased.

  8. Jason Says:

We will be looking into a better solution to the volume issue. For the time being, we ask everyone to please bear with this workaround for now.

  9. Wayne Says:

Looking forward to the buying Wordpower - Cantonese after the next update.

  10. Eric Says:

    Hello,
It is possible to write and record new word in the Wordpower Software ?
    Thank for your answer.

  11. John Lim Says:

I just bought your spanish flash card application for my iPhone 3G and the “Play Sound” does not work at all - no sound at all. Your “contact us” also do not have an email address for support such as this. Please help or refund if I can play the sound at all. Hope to get an early from you.

  12. Jason Says:

@Eric: No, it’s currently not possible to add your own words to WordPower. The new Gengo Flashcards app does have this feature, though.

@John Lim: Please try what I suggested in my previous post above (#7) for fixing the volume.

The support email for our iPhone apps is: mobileapps@innovativelanguage.com

  13. anna Says:

    hi!
    like your apps a lot!
but please do something with the spellings in your Farsi applications. it’s really annoying to try to figure out the right letter order/shape.

  14. Lea Says:

really love the app but unfortunatly it doesnt have sound, only stopped working around 1 week ago which is really annoying, so i don’t have the fully understanding and prounounciation of Arabic. I updated it and still doesnt work.

  15. Eva Says:

    Hi!

I really like the Gengo FlashCards software. Unfortunately, I own an ipod touch.

Will you be adding the possibility to create cards for the ipod touch any time soon?

    Thanks!

  16. Jason Says:

@Lea, did you try my suggestion up in post 7?

@Eva, yes, we are working on fixing that.

  17. Gerrit Says:

    Hi,

I like the concept of your apps. But the audio does not work at all on my iPhone 3G (OS 2.2.1). There is no problem with audio output in other apps (e.g., YouTube). Even with volume in YouTube turned up to max, there’s no audio in your app…

I’m really hoping you can fix the audio issue, because without audio, so much of the value of your apps is lost. It could be perfect ;)

    Regards,
    Gerrit

  18. D.P Says:

I bought the Polish flashcards by mistake. I did not realise that they do not work on the nano. Do you have any products for the nano for learning Polish?

  19. Jason Says:

@D.P, unfortunately, no. Apple has never opened up the Nano or any of the other classic iPods to developers in general, only the iPhone and iPod Touch. They’ve only allowed a small number of big developers to create games for the classic iPods.

  20. gorman Says:

you ruined the vietnamese to english wordpress on apple with an update that converted it to thai on may 27 and you still haven’t fixed it. you need to do a lot better than that.

  21. Jason Says:

Sorr about the WordPower Vietnamese mixup. And update to fix that was submitted last week. We’re just waiting for it to be approved by Apple.

  22. Jason Says:

    *Sorr -> Sorry

  23. Jason Says:

    Wow, I can’t spell tonight.

  24. Brooks Says:

    Hi Jason,
I originally contacted you back in April on the following, but I have not seen an update for Gengo Flashcards-Czech for the iPhone:
I would like to report a couple of problems. First, under the “Body parts” category, it shows a picture of a woman’s belly with a pierced belly button associated with the word “Teeth”. Second, it asks to select the “animal” in quiz mode when there are 3 pictures of animals–my wife is czech and pointed that one out. In addition, the entire subject of summer is messed up with incorrectly paired words in the flashcard mode. I have not reviewed all of the subjects in the hopes that an update would have been issued by now. Please let me know when you expect the update to be available.

  25. Disappointed John Says:

The Cantonese flash cards are filled with errors. From the sounds of it, other languages suffer from the same problems.

Please have native speakers thoroughly review your products as other language software houses do.

  26. Arash John Sammander Says:

You can get the volume a little louder by choosing a word and then increasing the volume bar under that word to the max. THEN play the word so you hear it while at the same time pushing the volume up button on the iphone. Continue to do this till the volume is at full.

You will have to keep pressing the playback sound a couple times while you increase the the volume with the side buttons because the volume keeps changing back to the ringer volume every second or so.

Otherwise, use your headphones, it is much louder then. Good luck.

  27. Kandi Eatmon Says:

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case. Have you tried the ipad? you can get one free at FreshGiftCard.com

  28. Robert Says:

Just bought Gengo Japanese, but can’t figure out how to access the handwriting feature. I’ve seen a screen shot of it so guess it exists. Can you help, Jason?

  29. Susan Says:

Will you be upgrading your software so that it’s compatible with the iPhone OS? The app that I recently purchased won’t work any more.thx

  30. Innovative Language Learning Says:

We submitted an update with support for OS4 and are waiting for Apple to approve it! Thank you for your patience!

  31. Jason Says:

The iOS 4 updates were approved today. They should start showing up in the App Store very soon if they’re not already there.

  32. Lammy Says:

I see that the iOS 4 update is in iTunes. I just bought the Gengo Russian Flashcards - do I have to buy it again to get the update to fix the crashing problem on my iPhone? How do I update the old version I just bought?

  33. ismail yk Says:

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

  34. Ula Says:

Hi I just bought your app MyWords and Gengo Cards for Danish language. I like the ideas but the MyWords app doesn’t update the words as promised (and I am connected to internet all the time…) and Gengo Cards mixes up flashcards (sometimes a words i being said many times but there is no flashcard to match it). Can you let me know if I did something wrong or is that going to be fixed?

    Thanks in advance

  35. Zy Ryder Says:

Hi, I’m having this problem with the Korean application. There is only 1 lesson at the lessons page. Must I buy the full version or something like that to have all the lessons?

  36. Wahyu Says:

@Ula, For MyWords, have you tried reinstalling the application? If that doesn’t help, please contact our support team at mobileapps@innovativelanguage.com, they will be able to help you in more detail.

@Zy Ryder, which application are you using? If it is the lite version, then yes, you will need to upgrade to a full version. If you are using Pocket3, you will have to buy credits and then get the lessons that you are interested in through the applications. For more detail, please contact our support team at mobileapps@innovativelanguage.com

  37. Kent Sterling Says:

Have been using the German lite for about a month when all of a sudden the application would not play any audio on my iPod. Other apps on the iPod have audible audio. Cannot find any settings for volume. Any suggestions???
    Respectfully,
    Kent Sterling

  38. Wahyu Says:

    @Kent:
If you have lost the ability to use the listen button after a recent update of WordPower(version 3.1), it seems that we have a bug that disabled all the audio if you updated from 3.0.2 to 3.1. Another update (V3.1.1) to fix this issue is available for download on iTunes now.

If you have any other issues, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

I am very sorry for the inconvenience.

    Best regards,
    Wahyu Guruh Widjaja
